- Jun 04, 2019 Rubbing the remake lamp for big returns. By Ted Giese “Aladdin” (2019), the latest in the recent line of live-action remakes of classic animated Disney films, retells the story from the 1992 animated feature of the same name of a “diamond-in-the-rough” thief and street urchin.
- Aladdin being clueless about how to wish on the genie's lamp could easily be interpreted as him gauging for a loophole. Sure enough, he tricks the Genie into freeing them from the Cave of Wonders by wishing to escape, but not rubbing the lamp whilst doing it. Even Genie was a little impressed by that!
Aladdin’s luck suddenly changes when he retrieves a magical lamp from the Cave of Wonders. What he unwittingly gets is a fun-loving Genie (Will Smith), who only wishes to have his freedom. Little do they know is that the Sultan’s sinister advisor Jafar (Marwan Kenzari), has his own plans for both Aladdin and the lamp. - Admit it, you had goosebumps when you heard Frank Welker reprising his role as the Cave of Wonders.'Only one may enter here. One whose worth lies far within. A diamond in the rough.'
- The scene with 'One Jump Ahead' showcases some wonderfulLe Parkour. If the music didn't proclaim he was Aladdin, he could easily pass for the Prince of Persia; climbing between narrow footholds, running along the walls, and leaping from building to building without a hint of uncertainty, all the while keeping most of guards' attention on him instead of his less parkour-apt new friend 'Dalia'.
- At the end of that song, Aladdin ups his Guile Hero status by using a carpet to escape... but in an incredibly realistic way. He uses the rolled-up carpet to fake he fell through a roof below, while he swings into another building, undetected.
- Later, Aladdin getting the epiphany to use that same skill to save Abu when he's trapped in a crevice.
- Jasmine's motivation for leaving the palace wasn't to escape the palace, but to see her kingdom for herself. As opposed to not wanting to be a princess, this Jasmine realizes that being royalty does have legitimate leverage for improving the way her people live.
- In the original, Jafar wasted his first wish on a power trip and lack of foresight. This time he seemes content with being Sultan... until Jasmine shows him up. With just a bit of charisma and courage she utterly destroys his authority, turning his men against him and rendering his first wish worthless. He needs to burn his second wish just to save himself, leaving him critically short in the final confrontation.
- Genie gets to showcase some Visual Effects of Awesome with everything he does; his smoky tail flows seamlessly into Will Smith's body, and every piece of his magic is flawless. 'Friend Like Me' does the original music video proud.
- When Aladdin and Genie first meet, Genie's clearly not impressed with his new master, and explains his deal by transforming Abu into a one-man band with a bass drum, cymbals, and a kazoo, really lazily rapping the first few lines of 'Friend Like Me', which is exactly what fans of the original movie feared this one would be like. Aladdin's unimpressed expression screams 'dude, come on'. So then Genie ups his game, and holy shit.I'm the Genie
Of the lamp
I can sing, rap, dance
If you give me a chance!- Generally, Will Smith's performance as the Genie. He had to fill in forRobin Williams... And, without trying to imitate him, succeeded. The only thing he had to do was be Will Smith.
- During the party, Genie convinces Aladdin to overcome his shyness with Jasmine. It may take a little magic-induced dancing for Aladdin to break the ice, but he steadily regains the confidence he had when he first met her.
- Abu saves Aladdin’s skin twice: first when Jafar tried to kill him in the Cave of Wonders, and again after seeing Jafar push Aladdin into the ocean, Abu is the one to bring the lamp to Aladdin.
- Similar to the case with Maleficent, we get a One-Winged Angel scene that was definitely Not His Sled; when Jasmine and Aladdin are flying away from Jafar, he turns Iago from a relatively ordinary parrot into a titanic rukh that raises all sorts of hell in Agrabah.
- The Sultan attempting to stop Jafar by knocking him over and making him drop his staff.
- Jasmine is much more involved in the climactic fight than she was in the original, stealing the lamp after seeing Aladdin flying to their rescue, and taking control of Carpet during a key moment of their escape.
- On the same note, rather than Aladdin simply surprising everyone by showing up after Jafar tried to drown him, he goes to Jasmine and they work together to entrap Jafar into a massive lie they can expose.
- And then there is her speech which brings Hakim over to her side (until Jafar spends his second wish to gain actual instead of official power). Her having the qualities of a ruler can hardly be in doubt.Jasmine: You were just a boy, when your father came to work the grounds. But you have risen up to become our most trusted soldier. As a man, I know you to be both loyal and just. But now you have to choose. Duty isn't always honor. Our greatest challenge, isn't speaking up against our enemies, but defying those whose approval we seek the most. Jafar is not worthy of your admiration, nor your sacrifice.
Jafar:I wish nothing but glory for the kingdom of Agrabah.
Jasmine:No.You seek glory for yourself. And you'd win it off the backs of MYPEOPLE! Hakim, these men... they will follow where you lead, but it's up to you. Will you stand silent while Jafar destroys our beloved kingdom — or will you do what is right? And stand with the people of Agrabah? - Also right before this, the entirety of 'Speechless (Part 2)'. This is an Imagine Spot that showcases her thought process after Jafar wishes himself to be Sultan, then orders Hakim and his men to take her away. But he has finally pushed Jasmine too far. She has finally had enough of being told to stay silent and to 'stay in your place', and she is pissed. The sheer emotion and ANGER that Naomi Scott pours into this moment is staggering. Not to mention that she sang it all live.Try to lock me in this cage — I won't just lay me down and dieI will take these broken wings and watch me burn across the sky!Though you wanna see me tremble when you try it
- Hakim deserves some points during the scene described above. When Jasmine begins her appeal to him, he chooses to hear her out, silencing Jafar with a raising of his hand and ordering the two guards escorting her to stand down and let her speak. Once he's won over, he extends his condolences to the princess and sultan for turning on them before giving his men an order they're all too happy to obey.
- Hakim: Guards...Arrest the vizier!
- And after Jafar uses his second wish to gain the powers of an almighty sorcerer, Hakim draws his own sword and makes to attack him himself, before he and his men are banished to the dungeons.
- Just the seamless way Aladdin tricks Jafar into wishing himself into a genie. He goes from pleading Jafar to see there will never be enough power to satisfy him,to pointing out there's someone else stronger than Jafar, who would always be 'second' to someone else, to goading Jafar to go for broke on his last wish. He even gets away with giving fair warning on wishing to be stronger than Genie.
- And unlike in the original, Genie quickly catches on to Aladdin's plan. Just look at how his expression morphs: from horror at Aladdin suggesting Jafar make a dangerous wish, to the sly, knowing smile of a trickster who's caught on as to where this is going. And he tops it off with a wink at Aladdin, letting him know he is in on the plan. When Jafar wishes to be “the most powerful being in the universe”, Genie uses the ambiguity of Jafar’s words to completely screw him over by turning him into an enslaved genie.
- The film became the third of Disney's live action remakes to crack a billion dollars. This also makes it Guy Ritchie's most successful film by a huge margin, almost twice the next highest Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. It also broke a 'Memorial Day weekend curse' that had several big movies bomb or underperform in the 21st century, most notoriously Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Aladdin and the Magic Lamp
This is the short story of Aladdin and the Magic Lamp. Once upon a time, a boy named Aladdin lived far, far away in the east. He lived with his mother and supported her by selling fruits in the market. One day the palace magician came to the market looking for him. “Come with me Aladdin, I have something to show you”, he said. He went with him. The magician led him deep into the desert. They reached the mouth of an immense cave, blocked by a massive rock. The magician stopped and began to say a spell. “Sala, Sala! Paprika! Alabra!”, the magician said by which the massive rock removed automatically.
Aladdin was so shocked. “Go into the cave and bring me golden lamp you will find there. Touch nothing but the lamp!”, the magician said. He was frightened because the passage into the cave was dark. The magician saw his hesitation and handed him a ring with a big gemstone. “Take this ring, it will protect you if anything goes wrong”, the magician said. He went inside. The cave overflowed with glittering gems and gold coins. Beneath a tree laden with treasures stood and an old lamp. “This must be it! But why would he want something so old and worthless? I should take one for my mother as well,” he wondered.

The moment Aladdin snatched the treasure, the whole cave began to shake with a thunderous booming sound. He took the magic lamp and ran towards the mouth of the cave. He asked the magician for help but he just wanted the lamp and told him to throw it. The way for entry and exit was now closed. He was left all alone in the dark, terrified. “It’s so dark and cold here! I want to go home to my mother”, he cried. He rubbed the gemstone on the ring that the magician gave him and suddenly it began to glow until it’s light filled the cave. The bright light was gone away and carried him home. Stunned, as he looked at the ring and saw that the gemstone had vanished.
Aladdin told his mother all about his adventure in the cave and about the magician and his ring. “Mom, take a look at the magical lamp”, he said. His mom rubbed it and suddenly, something incredible happened. A genie appeared and asked him for a wish. He was frightened but was excited that the genie could grant him a wish. He commanded him to get some delicious food as same as the palace. Within moments, a table loaded with tasty dishes appeared before him.
The genie’s magic made Aladdin very wealthy. One day, he came to the Sultan with magnificent gifts and treasures. “Your majesty, I have come to ask for your daughter’s hand in marriage”, he said. The Sultan was very pleased, but the princess was unimpressed by his treasures. He was disappointed and did not want to give up on the beautiful princess. He asked the genie to help him and then the genie created a magic carpet. The magician, who was watching him from across the room realized that he had the magic lamp. Turning to the Sultan, he told him to order Aladdin to raise a new palace as he took the princess on the ride through the sky on his magic carpet, and they had a wonderful time. Touched by his kindness and the beauty that he showed her, the princess decided to open her heart to him.
As soon as he returned from his magic carpet ride with the princess, the Sultan ordered him to build a palace. Aladdin rubbed the magic lamp and asked the genie if he could build a palace for him. Genie agreed and in some minutes he made a beautiful palace for his master. Aladdin was now able to marry the princess. However, the magician was still unhappy. He felt that the magic lamp should have been his and that Aladdin had stolen it from him.

One day, the magician came to visit Aladdin’s palace when Aladdin himself was out hunting. He disguised himself as a merchant and wound a turban around his head. “I buy old lamps! I can exchange an old lamp with the new one”, the magician said. The princess exchanged the magic lamp with the new one. The magician’s evil plan worked perfectly. Now that he had the lamp, he wanted to use it to take the princess and Aladdin’s palace for himself. He commanded genie to take Aladdin’s palace and move it to a far-off desert along with the princess. When Aladdin returned home, he was shocked to see that everything has vanished. His mother had just come back from the market and was too confused and amazed.
Aladdin searched far and wide for the princess. Finally, he heard that the magician was now living in the desert in his palace with the princess. The princess hugged Aladdin when he saw him and told him everything. Aladdin and the princess secretly slipped a sleeping pill into the magician’s wine. As soon as the magician drifted off to sleep, Aladdin snatched the magic lamp from his belt and rubbed it. He ordered the genie to move the palace back to where it was and leave the magician alone in the desert.
One day, Aladdin brought the magic lamp to the sea-shore and rubbed it. The genie asked Aladdin about his wish. Aladdin said,”You have granted so many of my wishes. I want to repay you by letting you free.” “Of all my many, many masters, not one has ever wished something for me! You are so kind!”, genie cried. The genie got free and Aladdin tossed the empty magic lamp into the sea and lived out his days in happiness and love, without envy or greed. Finally, there was a Happy Ending to the story of Aladdin and the Magic Lamp.
